Warhammer & Tabletop Gaming in the Blue Mountains
There’s no dedicated game store between Penrith and Lithgow — but there’s a real, growing tabletop community meeting every Thursday night in Lithgow, and it’s open to anyone in the Blue Mountains willing to make the drive.
I’m Kevin — I run Jack Monkey Games, and I also stock and sell Warhammer 40K out of LithGeek, my computer shop on Main Street in Lithgow. This page is the community side of that story: what Thursday nights are actually like, what systems people play, and how to walk in for the first time without feeling like you need a fully painted army to belong.
Thursday Nights, In Detail
Every Thursday, LithGeek stays open until 9pm and clears table space for gaming. It’s not a rigid, scheduled program — it’s a standing weekly night that flexes to whoever shows up and what they’re after. On any given Thursday you’ll typically find a mix of:
Casual play
Pick-up games between regulars, at whatever points level people bring. No tournament pressure, no ranking — just get a game in.
Hobby nights
Bring unpainted models and work on them at the table alongside other people. Half the value is the company, not the game itself.
New player nights
If you’ve never played, say so when you walk in. An experienced player will run you through a game from scratch — rules explained as you go, no assumed knowledge.
The through-line every week is the same: nobody gets left at the door for showing up with unpainted models, a small army, or zero rules knowledge. The experienced players in this group genuinely like teaching, which is the main reason the Thursday group has kept growing.
All Game Systems Welcome
Warhammer 40K is the anchor — it’s what’s stocked on the shelf at LithGeek and what most of the regulars play — but Thursday nights aren’t limited to it. Bring what you play:
Warhammer 40,000
The core game most of the group plays. Current-edition armies, all factions welcome.
Age of Sigmar
Fantasy-side Games Workshop players are welcome to bring armies and find opponents.
The Horus Heresy
If Heresy-era Space Marine legions are your thing, bring them along — there’s interest in the group.
Warhammer: The Old World
Old World armies are welcome too. It’s a small community, so cross-system games and demos happen organically.
First Steps: Never Played Before?
- Just show up on a Thursday. You don’t need to book, buy anything, or bring a painted army. Turning up is the whole first step.
- Say you’re new. Tell whoever you meet at the door. Someone will sit down with you specifically — that’s normal, not a special favour.
- Watch or play a small demo game. You can watch a turn or two first, or jump straight into a stripped-down teaching game with proxy or loaner models.
- Ask about starting armies at LithGeek. When you’re ready to buy in, LithGeek stocks starter sets, Citadel paints, and hobby tools, and can special-order anything they don’t have on the shelf — no upfront payment, you pay when it arrives.
- Come back the next Thursday. The community builds through repetition, not a single big night. Most regulars started exactly the way you would.

Make a Night of It on Main Street
If you’re driving in from Katoomba, Blackheath, or Springwood, Lithgow’s Main Street has enough around it to turn a Thursday game night into an evening out:
- El Latte — dog-friendly café with a Mediterranean-leaning menu, good for a coffee or an early dinner before you head to the shop.
- The Hub Gourmet Pizza Bar — at 65 Main Street, a few doors up, open into the evening if you want pizza before or after gaming.
- Lost Souls Bookshop — at 114 Main Street, a second-hand and new bookshop that also stocks RPG games and supplies, worth a browse if you’re into tabletop RPGs as well as Warhammer.
